Promises, Promises

We are waiting for the intermission to end, and I Promise, Promise I’ll write more about it.

promises

Promises, Promises is fairly dated piece from the early sixties, with a Bacharach score, so the whole thing was a blast from the past. So much of this show was wonderful and perfect, with incomparable vocals from both Kristen Chenoweth and Sean Hayes, and a hot ensemble cast full of talented actors. Callie ranked the three shows we attended as follows:

The Addams Family

Wicked

Promises, Promises

After thinking about it, I agree. The Addams Family was innovative, fun, and with Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth in a comedy, how can it go far wrong? And like Promises, Promises, AF had a top notch cast throughout.

Wicked was good, but after a few viewings, it’s interesting but probably doesn’t deserve our #1 ranking just because we’ve seen it so much.

So I think what kept Promises, Promises out of our top two positions is simply that it has too much substance. I’m not ready for a musical comedy where a lead character attempts suicide. I seem to recall that this sort of thing is a Neil Simon trademark plot, and heck, substance is a good thing, right? But I’m an escapist, so I have a little trouble with the plot. It’s a GREAT show with spectacular performances, though. Really. Oh, and Katie Finneran ( of Wonderfalls) was hilarious- kept the whole audience in stitches as Marge MacDougall.

I think all three of these shows were so good that ranking them is almost futile, but we did anyway. Go see them all!
