I don’t know if I can answer that, but let me show you something that I like, and that is vaguely similar to what takes me to the east coast with a truck. I have a Seeburg KT Special in my small collection, and I’m rather proud of it. I put a recording of it on YouTube and thought you might enjoy it. I have been building my collection of pianos for thirty years, and I’m going to New York to pick up my latest addition. I’ll tell you more about that piano soon, but obviously I don’t have any recordings of it playing, since I don’t have it yet. So here’s a rendition of Waltz of the Flowers on my Seeburg.

Did you enjoy that? You know, if you think about it, that is the very music our parents or grandparents enjoyed down at the local cafe or bar almost a century ago. Same piano, same roll, same performance. Or–another way of looking at it is that this was an early computer, designed to respond to a paper tape in pre-programmed ways. Before electronic components, vacuum tubes, in some cases even before sound recording. Have you seen a coin operated piano or nickelodeon in use anywhere?
